"Cry Baby" Director's Cut on DVD

The Bottom Line

A long time ago when Johnny Depp was a teen heartthrob on "21 Jump Street," John Waters took a chance on the young actor and cast him in the lead role in "Cry Baby." Depp went on to earn indie cred and Waters once again proved he was ahead of his time.

With the Director's Cut of "Cry Baby" on DVD, fans are permitted an up close and personal look at the story behind the film and why Waters cast such an eclectic group of characters. Pick this one up even if you haven't seen the original.

Guide Review - "Cry Baby" Director's Cut DVD Review

Johnny Depp stars as Wade 'Cry Baby' Walker in "Cry Baby," a romantic musical from writer/director John Waters.

As usual, Waters assembles a cast of interesting actors to fill out his film. Ex-porn star Traci Lords, rocker Iggy Pop, and newcomer Amy Locane all play key roles in this wild, enthusiastic ride. But it's Johnny Depp who, as happens in most of his films, steals the show. His sex appeal was pretty much cemented with his role as a rebellious young man who falls for a girl from the other side of the tracks.

Cry Baby's a rocker who rides a motorcycle, wears leather, and hangs with an odd ensemble of juvenile delinquents. When good girl Allison Vernon-Williams (Locane) spies Cry Baby, she quickly discovers that being bad can be very, very good.

DVD BONUS FEATURES:

John Waters provides an in-depth inside look at the making of "Cry Baby" with his director's commentary track. Waters explains - with a lot of good humor - why he choose to cast Patty Hearst and Traci Lords, and how happy he was when Iggy Pop and David Nelson signed on to the film. Waters' commentary track is nearly as entertaining as the film itself.

The 'It Came from Baltimore' featurette is a lengthy one and infinitely better than most behind-the-scenes pieces. The featurette, which includes older interviews as well as a few recent ones with the cast and Waters, is definitely worth checking out.
