Guide Review - "Coffee and Cigarettes" DVD Review
...Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, Steve Coogan, Alfred Molina, Steve Buscemi, Steven Wright, The White Stripes, and Wu-Tang Clan members RZA and GZA...What happens when you take the above mentioned celebrities and have them discuss sometimes meaningful, other times purely abstract, subjects over coffee and cigarettes? If it's filmmaker Jim Jarmusch ("Mystery Train") stirring the pot, then you get a strangely intriguing film.
It's almost impossible to describe "Coffee and Cigarettes" in a way that adequately captures the experience of watching this black and white cinema charmer. Shot over a period of almost 20 years, "Coffee and Cigarettes" features the award-winning short "Somewhere in California" along with "Strange to Meet You," the vignette which started it all back in 1986.
"Coffee and Cigarettes" is one of those rare films that seems to play better on DVD than in theaters. Maybe it's because you can relax in a more intimate setting, have a good cup of coffee, and replay segments that strike your interest - and skip through those that don't. I don't know exactly what it is, but "Coffee and Cigarettes" is better experienced at home. Go figure.
