The Bottom Line

Can you believe "9 to 5" was released way back in 1980? What's even more amazing is that while the office has come a long way, the major issue addressed in the film hasn't been totally done away with as of 2006. There are still corporations where women can't break through the glass ceiling. But enough politicizing. The 'Sexist, Egotistical, Lying, Hypocritical Bigot' DVD edition of "9 to 5" is worth checking out and not just for the movie. Be sure to watch all the behind-the-scenes goodies.

Guide Review - "9 to 5" Special Edition DVD Review

In Roger Ebert's original review of "9 to 5," the famed critic said this comedy would only be remembered as the film that launched Dolly Parton's movie career. Little did anyone know back in 1980 how well received this issue-charged movie would be or how long a shelf life the film would have.

The story follows three women - played by Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton - who become unlikely partners in crime when backed into a corner by their chauvinistic boss (the scene-chewing Dabney Coleman). The threesome get revenge against their boss from hell and take over the office, creating a much more female-friendly and pleasant workplace in the process.

This special 'Sexist, Egotistical, Lying, Hypocritical Bigot' Edition DVD includes a plethora of special features. The stars of the film join their producer for a new commentary track that gets off to a shaky start and then slowly finds its way. Tomlin, Parton, and Fonda share their memories from the set and, if you can get past Parton's intrusive laughing, the commentary track is actually pretty informative and entertaining. In addition to the new track, this special DVD edition includes deleted scenes and an interesting making of featurette.
