The Unrated Version of "Doom" on DVD.

The Bottom Line

I'm pretty sure this movie wasn't made for non-videogamers like myself. I did attempt to play "Doom" ages ago but got seasick and had to stop, so this movie's creatures and characters weren't all that familiar to me. Nevertheless, I can see where if you're in the mood for watching a bunch of ruggedly handsome men blowing away creepy creatures, then "Doom" might not be a bad rental choice.

  • The effects and monsters are suitably creepy

Guide Review - "Doom" DVD Review

I feel it's necessary to start this review with the following disclaimer: I didn't see the original theatrical version of "Doom" so I have no idea what the difference is between this unrated, extended cut and the one released into theaters.

"Doom" - The Story

The Rock stars as Sarge, the bad-ass leader of a bunch of rippling muscled men (including Karl Urban as John Grimm) called the Rapid Response Tactical Squad. Sarge and his men are given the duty of checking out what happened to a group of researchers on a remote Martian outpost. Once there, the heavily-armed, well-trained unit have to fight for the survival of mankind against some of the creepiest creatures ever to be featured in a video game-turned-movie.

The Bonus Features

I'm sure there were outtakes and extra scenes but this DVD is void of those sort of bonus features. Instead there's plenty of behind-the-scenes featurettes which are decent - if not a little redundant.

Final Words

The effects are decent, the acting is about what you'd expect from a movie headlined by The Rock, and the pacing is fast enough that time virtually flies by. As long as you're not worried about a plot, then "Doom" is an okay popcorn flick that doesn't tax your brain or leave a lasting impression.
