Rosamund Pike on the Male Dominated Set of "Doom:" Pike is one of the very few females in "Doom," the sci-fi/action film based on the popular video game. In "Doom," Pike stars as Dr. Samantha 'Sam' Grimm, the sister of John Grimm (Karl Urban). While John went the military route, Sam chose to become a scientist to carry on their parents work after they were killed.

Pike said that being on the mostly male set was a great experience. "It was wonderful. Actually I don’t think they knew what to make of me because Sam’s not a very… She’s quite a tough cookie in the movie. She’s not a very feminine creature and I think sometimes they didn’t know how to handle me. Also, I’m covered in blood for most of this film. I have blood up to my elbows and all over my costume.

It was different. It’s not where you feel your sexiest, I have to say, even surrounded by a tribe of Marines, which is a pretty good position to find yourself in," said Pike.

Was She the Target of Any Pranks on the Set of "Doom?" Given the fact she was about the only female around, Pike could have been the target of lots of practical jokes. However Pike says there was really just one incident. "Well, I think the only practical joke they really did was there was a scene where I had to take the insides out of one of the monsters. We were two days late in filming it and they promised me that these insides – this is really gross, right? – they promised me the insides would be kept refrigerated but I think they left them out. So by the time I stuck my hand in them, the smell was unbelievably bad. So when you picture that, when you see that moment in the film, then picture the smell."

Rosamund Pike on Researching Her Character: "I think, you know, as an actor we get these terribly sort of pretentious ideas in our heads. We try to take everything very seriously at first, you know, until we lighten up, we get onboard, and have a laugh. But I thought if I’m going to be cutting up monsters, I want to know that I look like I know what I’m doing. So I took myself off to the Prague Medical School and studied human dissection. (Laughing) I mean, why?

On the first day I walked in and there was this kind of room full of half excavated dead human beings. I thought, ‘What have I done?’ I put on my rubber shoes and my lab coat and my goggles and went for it. It was fascinating. Honestly, it was a privilege."

Rosamund Pike's Never Played "Doom:" Pike admits she didn't play the game before getting the role and she hasn't played it since, which makes her the perfect person to ask about the attraction of "Doom" the movie to non-video gamers, especially women.

"Well I think we’ve harnessed a good story to it. If I’m honest, people aren’t watching it for the story. They’re watching it for the guns, for the action, for the boys, for everything else. But if you do get dragged along with your boyfriend, then there is a good story in there. I think it tells a story that does tap into our primal fears about science and the way science is going and genetic engineering going wrong."

Rosamund Pike from "Pride and Prejudice" and "The Libertine" to "Doom:" "The job of an actor is the same in all of them, really. I mean, you’re just creating a character that you hope people will believe, so it doesn’t make that much of a difference really.

It’s a huge action movie but the role wasn’t a particularly action one for me. I don’t have a lot of physical stuff to do. I don’t fire any guns. I don’t kill anyone. I just cut them up. But when I was offered this job I was in the middle of a corn field in England dressed in a corset and bonnet. They rang me up and said, ‘You’ve been offered the part in Doom.’ I thought, ‘If they could see me now, they’d say we’ve got the wrong girl.’ But it was a ball. It was fantastic."
