The Rock on Selling "Doom" to Non-Video Gamers: "You dont have to be a gamer to understand 'Doom.' First of all, we made sure that we were loyal to the video game. And when you have that foundation of truth, then what we wanted to do was go out and make a great sci-fiction horror in the line of 'Alien' and The Thing,' which is one of my favorites.
(Laughing) If you have half a brain and you can understand science fiction horror, which Im sure you can and all the women out there can, then theyre going to love the movie."
Karl Urban on the Creatures of "Doom:" "There were frickin scary. They were big, they had a bunch of eyes. They had this guy Doug Jones who was standing in this costume. Hes like 7' tall. You know its a small leap of imagination when youre standing in a dark sewer and theres this hulking thing coming at you."
Karl Urban on the Boot Camp Experience: "It was like a baby boot camp. It wasnt as intense as some boot camps Ive heard of. But we were trained by this guy called Tom McAdams whos ex-Army, 25 years, been in every theater of war you can imagine. He did a really excellent job of getting us up to speed. I really learned a lot from him and managed to infuse quite a few details into the character."
Karl Urban on What He Picked Up from the Film's Military Advisor: "Well, things like how to hold a weapon, how to move with a weapon. Certain bits of dialogue that I picked up from him like slang, Army slang. You know whenever anyone ever talks about, Oh I got the good news today. What immediately triggers through my mind is Tom talking about one of his buddies, Yeah, he got the good news, and you know what it meant. [Urban does a slicing motion across his throat to indicate what it means] Or, We gave him the good news.
It was really interesting. I learned a hell of a lot and I didnt actually enter into this movie thinking I would learn a lot about facets of life or anything like that. But to sort of learn about this whole military culture is a real eye opener."
Karl Urban's Video Game Background: "Yeah, I played video games on and off for quite a few years. I played Doom and was a fan of the game and that was my prime reason for doing the film."
Urban went on to explain that people who've never played Doom before will still be able to get into the movie. "I think youll get off on it whether youre a fan or not. Its action-packed. Its a roller coaster ride. And its got a great surprise twist at the end."
The Rock on Preparing for "Doom:" The Rock says he didn't spend a lot of time leading up to filming playing the game. "Well not to prepare for it because I had been a big fan of Doom anyways and I was familiar with the storyline. I was familiar with it when it first came out, almost 15 years ago. In order to prepare for it I just thought, 'Okay, lets see. Big monsters going into space big gun kicking ass Im ready.'"
