June 21, 2010 - Walt Disney Pictures/Jerry Bruckheimer Films announced filming has begun on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides with Johnny Depp back in pirate gear for the fourth film of the blockbuster series. The comedy adventure will be directed by Rob Marshall (Nine, Chicago) and, according to Disney, will be the first film of the franchise to be shot in Disney Digital 3D.

Joining Depp for On Stranger Tides are Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R McNally, Penelope Cruz (who worked with Marshall on Nine), Ian McShane, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, and Sam Claflin. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio wrote the script and are executive producing with Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, John DeLuca and Barry Waldman.

Filming will take place in Kauai, Oahu, the UK, and Los Angeles. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides sails into theaters on May 20, 2011.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl kicked things off in 2003, filling its treasure chests with $653 million worldwide. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest followed in 2006, earning $1.06 billion before exiting theaters. And Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End in 2007 netting $958 million worldwide.

In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.
