Wes Craven Faces "Cursed" and "Feast" Questions at WonderCon 2006

What Went Wrong with "Cursed" and What's Happening with "Feast"

Wes Craven tried to stick to questions about the 2006 remake of his classic 1977 horror film “The Hills Have Eyes” when he took the stage at WonderCon, Northern California’s biggest comic book convention. However once the promotional panel for “The Hills Have Eyes” was opened up for questions from the audience, everything and anything associated with Craven apparently was fair game.

Craven executive produced the third Project Greenlight film, “Feast,” along with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The veteran filmmaker also served as a mentor to the film’s young crew. "Feast," director John Gulager’s horror film about a group of people trapped in a remote bar terrorized by flesh-eating creatures, was scheduled to hit theaters in March 2006 but it’s been pulled off the Weinstein Company’s schedule.

Asked about the current status of “Feast” Craven said, “‘Feast’ is off in Weinstein Land and I don’t know exactly what there plans are. I know they were going to be opening it almost the same weekend as ‘Hills Have Eyes’ and I heard that they pulled it. I have seen it, the final product, and I thought it was really terrific. A lot of fun – sexy, crazy, bloody and a real filmmaker at work. I have no idea what their plans are. I guess you need to write to the website of the Weinstein company maybe and ask them what their plans are. It would help if everybody did that because I think the film really deserves to be shown.”

After complimenting Craven’s body of work, one young woman in the WonderCon crowd proved she had a lot of guts. The unidentified WonderCon attendee asked Craven if she and her boyfriend could get their money back for “Cursed.” The crowd reacted about as you’d expect when she dropped that bomb, and Craven appeared floored by the question before responding, “Watch the DVD. That was the film I made.”

Craven’s “Cursed” was riddled with production problems and in fact was shot once and then basically scrapped, major parts were recast, and shot again. “‘Cursed’ was truly Cursed,” explained Craven. “I try and say less and less about it as the days go by but after we turned it in, the studio did its own cut and actually had some other director go out and shoot some stuff on video just for the hell of it and cut that into it too. I felt violated and I’m in therapy right now (laughing). I’m not working with the Weinsteins right now.”

While definitely not working with the Weinsteins, Craven is nevertheless hard at work on a variety of projects. Craven explained that with “Red Eye” and other commitments, he was unable to be a part of “Masters of Horror” but he admires the series and hopes to do something for it soon. He also recently shot a short film that’s one of the 20 segments featured in “Je T'aime.” “Je T’aime” is 20 stories of love set in the City of Love – Paris. Each of the segments is directed by a different director and each was filmed in Paris. Craven revealed his short was shot in front of Oscar Wilde’s grave. Other directors contributing to the film include Alfonso Cuaron, Walter Salles, Gus Van Sant, Alexander Payne, and Gerard Depardieu.
