Russell Crowe Pleads Guilty to Throwing a Phone at a Hotel Employee

Oscar Winner Crowe Avoids Jail Time in Phone-Throwing Case

By , About.com Guide

Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe ("Gladiator") pleaded guilty on November 18, 2005 to assaulting Mercer Hotel employee Nestor Estrada with a faulty telephone handset.

The incident occurred while Crowe was on the publicity tour for "Cinderella Man." At the time of the assault, Crowe was enraged because he couldn't complete a call to his wife, Danielle Spencer, in Australia.

Throwing a phone at the hotel concierge was probably the worst thing Crowe could have done at the time. The incident did nothing to help "Cinderella Man" at the box office and made the actor, who already had a reputation as a hot-head, come off looking like a spoiled jerk.

41-year-old Crowe avoided jail time and the loss of his ability to work in America by pleading guilty to third-degree assault, admitting he did throw the phone which injured Estrada, a concierge at the hotel where Crowe was staying in New York.

Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Kathryn Freed accepted the plea and ordered the actor to pay $160 in court costs. As part of his conditional discharge, Crowe must not be arrested for one year.
