May 12, 2005 - Kevin Costner ("The Upside of Anger") and Ashton Kutcher ("Guess Who," "A Lot Like Love") have been tapped to star in the action-drama, "The Guardian," to be directed by Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive").

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kutcher will star as a rebellious young man who joins the Coast Guard and becomes friends with a legendary rescue swimmer (Costner). Though Kutcher's best known for his work in comedies (and his TV series "Punk'd"), he has gone the dramatic route before in "The Butterfly Effect," a 2004 thriller released by New Line Cinema.

Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Beacon Entertainment are producing the film with Touchstone Pictures. Filming is expected to begin later this year.

Costner received positive reviews for his performance as a retired baseball player in "The Upside of Anger" co-starring Joan Allen. Next up is "Rumor Has It" with Jennifer Aniston.

Ashton Kutcher had hits with back-to-back romantic comedies, "Guess Who" with Bernie Mac and "A Lot Like Love" with Amanda Peet. Kutcher's currently at work providing a voice for the animated family film, "Open Season."
