Clooney is a member of the United Way Board of Trustees and gave to the organization to assist the short term needs of individuals and families who are displaced due to the devastating storm and subsequent levee breaks.
United Way says their Hurricane Katrina Response Fund will be used to "support the communities that have opened their hearts and homes to those individuals and families displaced by Hurricane Katrina in addition to providing long-term recovery and rebuilding to the devastated areas."
In a statement issued by the United Way, actor/director/producer Clooney said, "There isn't much any of us can do right now but pour money into this tragedy. As a member of the Board of Trustees of United Way, we'll be there now, a month from now and a year from now. Today our neighbors need food, shelter and health care, but the very near future is when the difficult part of rebuilding lives and homes and cities starts. We're all in this one together."
President and CEO of United Way of America Brian A Gallagher said, "We appreciate George's leadership in recognizing the immediate and long-term needs of those affected by this devastation. As an organization, United Way -- is, has been, and will continue to be -- on the ground in these communities -- and nationwide -- offering support, assistance and rebuilding lives." Gallagher went on to add, "We greatly appreciate George's generosity both in dollars and the time he contributes as a United Way volunteer."
