John Travolta has already been cast as Edna Turnblad (Divine's role in the original film) and Queen Latifah will play Motormouth Maybelle. New Line's been conducting a nationwide search for the right actress to play Tracy Turnblad.
Adam Shankman will direct the movie musical from a script adapted by Leslie Dixon. Filming is expected to begin soon with an eye on releasing Hairspray in the summer of 2007.
Bynes was recently seen in the gender mix-up comedy, She's the Man.
