The Bottom Line

Breach is a mesmerizing tale of treason featuring a stellar cast, led by Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe. The film never found the audience it deserved during its theatrical run, but hopefully will be discovered on DVD. A great addition to any home video collection, Breach is a character-driven thriller made all the more riveting because it's based on true events.

Guide Review - Breach DVD Review

Chris Cooper stars as veteran FBI operative Robert Hanssen and Ryan Phillippe co-stars as agency newbie Eric O'Neill in Breach, written and directed by Billy Ray (Shattered Glass).

Eric O'Neill is pulled from his surveillance job and reassigned as an assistant to Agent Hanssen in order to gather information on the veteran FBI agent. At first told he's been placed there to help build a case against Hanssen as a sexual deviant, O'Neill shortly learns the truth is much more sinister. Hanssen, an agent with 25 years of service, is suspected of treason. It's left up to O'Neill to obtain evidence that will be critical in arresting and convicting Hanssen.

The Bonus Features

The Breach DVD contains an above average assortment of extra features. The commentary track by the real Eric O'Neill and writer/director Billy Ray provides an in-depth look at the casting of the film, the true story, and the staging of certain scenes. In addition, the behind the scenes featurettes allow audiences inside the making of Breach and aren't simply fluff pieces to pad out the DVD.
