Did Bobby awaken something political in you?
Brian Geraghty: “I think the film did, but also the press tour really touched on a lot of things. We’ve been talking about this for five days now non-stop and I’m starting to realize like, ‘Dude, we don’t have this s**t man.’ We could live better lives as Americans. I mean, I don’t know. It’s so deluded where we are in Hollywood and everything’s all about working, you know? I’d like to be more on the terms of like an American citizen that votes for his country but it’s hard, because we we’re not inspired to get out there. You’re not inspired…not to vote - I vote - but there’s no presidential candidate that really inspires me.”
Shia LaBeouf: “It’s more like you’re voting for the lesser of two evils.”
Were there more scenes with the two of you that didn’t make it into the film?
Shia LaBeouf: “Oh my God, yes.”
Brian Geraghty: “Like we saw the first cut, we thought it was picture locked. We’re like, ‘This is the movie, dude.’ We saw it in August and there’s just like… The acid scene, there’s like a moment or two more, but the moments really counted. I’m talking like five, ten seconds. Now there’s 35 seconds cut out of that, maybe a minute.”
Shia LaBeouf: “We had about 30 seconds cut out.”
Why did Emilio Estevez cut it?
Shia LaBeouf: “He had to start shaving off the ends, make the movie more compact. It would be like a 2 ½ hour movie. Nobody’s going to sit through that. But there will be a director’s cut DVD.”
Brian Geraghty: “Like the pool scene. At first it was the second half, which is the funny part and now it’s just… It works, but that was a longer scene and stuff like that. But I mean we fare better than anyone. At first we were like, ‘Everything we did was in the movie.’ I was like, ‘Holy s**t!’”
Did you actually end up with more screen time than anyone else?
Brian Geraghty: “What I’ve calculated is we end up with… (Laughing) No, I’m only kidding.”
Shia LaBeouf: “I know they cut back to us more than anybody else. We’re a three-part story. They don’t have a three-part story with any of the other characters. I think it’s between us, Macy, Demi and Sharon. I would say that that’s the top, which is nuts, to be able to say that. The fact that we got more screen time than Belafonte and Hopkins, that’s insane, crazy s**t.”
Brian Geraghty: “So many people talk about their perfect movie. This dude was like every time I pulled up in my car, he was out of hair and makeup already to go. It’s that kind of movie. You can’t wait to get there and be there.”
Shia LaBeouf: “You would be there six hours before.”
Did you recognize that when you picked up the script?
Shia LaBeouf: “For me, it was as soon as I saw Hopkins’ name. I knew it was going to be something – it’s Hopkins.”
Brian Geraghty: “I’d never read a script that he was attached to.”
Shia LaBeouf: “Here’s the craziest visual. They’re tearing the f**king Ambassador Hotel down, we’re building our sets up. They’ve got 22 cast chairs, with the sickest actors you’ve ever heard of, lined up like lined up, unbelievable experience.”
Did you have to take a moment to let it sink in?
Shia LaBeouf: “Yeah, a couple of times. I remember the first day we were shooting, I said to Brian, ‘This is weird man, I don’t feel nervous to be the first to shoot.’ Brian goes, ‘Really?’ And we look over at the monitor and there’s Hopkins sitting there. I don’t even know how to explain what the feeling was, but it was the type of feeling where you wanted to reach inside of your mouth and pull your stomach out and look at it and go, ‘God damn,’ and then put it back inside. This might be too descriptive.”
Brian Geraghty: “You know what really put it in perspective? We were at the Hollywood Film Festival. I didn’t know what that really was. I’m like, ‘Who cares? We’re getting an award,’ I’ve never gotten an award in my live for anything. And we managed to have a couple drinks at the table, we’re having a good time, everybody’s looking around. De Niro’s there, Clint Eastwood got an award, Robin Williams, Forrest Whitaker, Benicio Del Toro, I mean that was pretty out of control.
We have this moment where Heather Graham is like [announcing] and we’ve got all kind of stand up when we get the award. It’s an emotional moment. My mom was staying at that hotel when I first moved out to L.A. to visit me, and I couldn’t get a job and I’m walking through there and I’m looking at all these pictures wondering. Cut to two and a half years later, I’m walking up on the stage with these people getting an award and I feel proud because I think I helped – I feel we did our part. We did everything we could, the rest is up to the editors and the Weinsteins. That was a really proud moment, I think, for me, and I’m sure for Shia. We got to be a part of this and we got to not be a weak part of it, be a strong part.”
