Why arent there more decent roles for mature women in films?
Helen Hunt: I wish there was some big overall reason that I understood or answer that I understand. It's very case by case. I feel like the more writers are nurtured, the better shot everybody has. The more the writers are important, the more the writers are in the center of it all, I think, the better chance everybody has of doing good work. The more filmmakers like Emilio who have, you know, a very particular vision that isn't maybe describable in one sentence, the better shot we all have.
Something that happened in this movie that I noticed watching it, my character is kind of very gossamer. My impression of her is you can't describe her in a sentence or two, but I feel like my work was sort of improved by the scene that Demi and Sharon had. The things Demi says in that room about a woman not being valued, that somehow affected my performance because I was nowhere near them at the time that they said something. I think good writing is good writing, and when something bigger comes through the writer, that's exciting. I feel like that happened with Emilio in this movie over and over, which is to his credit, that he in the right frame of mind to let his work come through on something bigger and bigger and bigger come through.
Demi Moore: I think most importantly it's us as women as individuals that if we hold a belief system that says we are not viable or valuable if we are not 20 or 30, then there will be less. I think by the very nature of holding a belief that we have interesting stories to tell at all ages. There's a wonderful time in your life when you're in your teens, your 20's and in your 30's and 40's and 50's. We all have more stories to tell, to share. I think that we can't wait for the world to say, Yes, that's what we want. We have to continue to create and know that we have something to share.
Has there been any reaction from the Kennedy family?
Emilio Estevez: Kerry Kennedy is the only member of Bobby's family that I know who has seen some of the footage because I showed it to her. She was very moved, but of course she could not and would not watch the end of the film. Ethel and Kerry have both made a statement. They both support the film. They are encouraged by this idea that an entire new generation is going to hear the words of Bobby Kennedy at a time and place in our country when we need to hear his words more than ever. They are supporting the film, but, again, more than likely they are not going to watch it.
