According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bale and Jackman would play rival magicians who engage in such an intense feud over trade secrets that they become murderers.
Christopher Nolan's brother Jonathan adapted the screenplay from the novel by Christopher Priest. Filming on the dramatic movie is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2006.
Christian Bale will next be seen in "The New World" for director Terrence Malick. Hugh Jackman has completed work on "The Fountain," co-starring Rachel Weisz, and is now working on the third film of the "X-Men" franchise.
