The Bottom Line

Babel's a tough film to watch and definitely not one of those movie's you'd pick up when you're in the mood for breezy entertainment. The Oscar nominated film features a batch of amazing performances and for that reason alone deserves the attention it received during the 2007 awards season.

Babel would normally rank higher than 3 stars however for some reason the critically acclaimed movie is being released on DVD without any bonus features.

Pros
  • Terrific performances by the entire cast
  • A mostly gripping story
Cons
  • Not a single bonus feature!

Description

  • R for violence, some graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use
  • Earned seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture
  • DVD Release Date: February 20, 2007

Guide Review - "Babel" DVD Review

Babel is the creation of writer Guillermo Arriaga and director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and features performances by Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal, Adriana Barraza, and Rinko Kikuchi (the latter two earned Academy Award nominations for their supporting roles). Multiple storylines play out over the course of the film, finally weaving their way together during the movie's final act.

The story revolves around a vacationing American couple (Pitt and Blanchett) who are involved in a horribly tragic incident in Morocco. As they struggle against all odds to get help, back home in San Diego their children are being watched over by a Mexican housekeeper (Barraza) who makes a bad decision and takes the young kids with her across the border to celebrate her son's wedding.

Meanwhile in Japan, a story is unfolding involving a deaf schoolgirl who recently lost her mother. That portion of the story also focuses on the strained relationship with her remaining parent. All the while back in Morocco, the authorities are on the trail of what they believe to have been a terrorist group responsible for shooting a busload of tourists (and that leads us back to Pitt and Blanchett's story).
