Top 10 Worst Movies: 2005

By Rebecca Murray, About.com

Before reading my Worst of 2005 list, please keep in mind I never put together 'Worst of' lists. I think they're mean-spirited and for the most part unnecessary. However 2005 was so loaded with bad films that it practically begged for a best of the worst list.

Gathering together this list was much, much more difficult than putting together a Top 10 list of the best films of 2005. There were so many terrible movies that deserved to be included, and sadly only 10 spots to fill.

1. "A Sound of Thunder"

A combination of terrible acting, a mind-numbingly lame plot, and the worst special effects since the B movies of the 60s.

2. "House of D"

Everything about this movie angers me - not just Robin Williams' bizarre performance as a man with a mental disability who can think 'smarter' when he feels like it.

3. "Lords of Dogtown"

Been there, done that, and it was much better the first time. Hollywood messed with a great documentary by turning it into feature film and in the process learned a valuable lesson. If it's not broke, don't try fixing it.

4. "Undiscovered"

The fact Ashlee Simpson isn't the worst thing about "Undiscovered" (previously titled "Wannabe") speaks loads.

5. "The Island"

Michael Bay’s attitude is ‘damn the critics’ (he actually used a much harsher, none PG-rated expression). He’s learned through much experience critics in general detest his work. Smart man.

6. "Valiant"

I'd like to meet the studio executive who really thought audiences would want to see an animated movie about World War II pigeons.

7. "The Underclassman"

A snorefest featuring unbelievable characters and improbable situations.

8. "Son of the Mask"

Where do I start? It's just silly. The idea, the execution, the effects - all of it is just plain silly.

9. "Stealth"

Love the cast - hate the movie. The fact it busts out in a travelogue video in the second act was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

10. "Dark Water"

So many movies could have wound up in this spot ("Deuce Bigalow 2" chief among the contenders) but "Dark Water" claimed the final spot in my Top 10 list. Why? Because it could have been so good but somewhere in production lost its way. And the fact I don't find water dripping from a ceiling to be scary - just annoying - also helped "Dark Water" earn the 10th spot on my list.
