"King Kong" barely beat out runner-up "Capote," the Truman Capote biopic that's been having a good awards season thus far. The SD Film Critics did however select "Capote" helmer Bennett Miller as the year's best director and "Capote" star Philip Seymour Hoffman as Best Actor. "Capote" screenwriter Dan Futterman also captured the Best Adapted Screenplay nod.
The critics found Joan Allen's work as a harried mother in "The Upside of Anger" deserving of their Best Actress award. Best Supporting Actress honors went to Rachel Weisz in "The Constant Gardener." Jeffrey Wright was named Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Broken Flowers."
Shane Black took home the Best Original Screenplay award for his buddy film, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." "Innocent Voices" won Best Foreign Language Film. "Howl's Moving Castle" was selected Best Animated Film, and Werner Herzog's "Grizzly Man" came out on top as the Best Documentary of 2005.
The San Diego Film Critics Society chose Emmanuel Lubezki as best cinematographer for his work on the Terrence Malick film "The New World." Ronald Sanders picked up Best Editing honors for "A History of Violence."
The critics chose to honor Jake Gyllenhaal for Body of Work during 2005 for his performances in "Proof," "Jarhead" and "Brokeback Mountain."
