Steve Carell and Tiny Fey were the first two presenters at the 2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards, and Carell took the opportunity to welcome the audience to the "most glamorous and exciting evening in the history of the world." That statement's a bit of an exaggeration, but the SAG Awards was the most glamorous award show honoring actors held thus far in 2008. And if the Writers Guild and the studios don't settle their differences, it could wind up being the biggest awards event of the year.

Although the usually glitzy Golden Globes had to settle for a short press conference in lieu of its annual star-studded event, the Screen Actors Guild Awards went on as planned. Occasionally winners would give a shout-out to the striking members of the Writer Guild, but otherwise it was almost impossible to tell Hollywood's going through some real troubling times. Josh Brolin, speaking on behalf of the No Country for Old Men cast, had some fun at the expense of movie studios, but otherwise it was a politically correct and upbeat show.

In one of the night's most touching moments, winner Daniel Day-Lewis paid tribute to Heath Ledger who passed away unexpectedly on January 22. Day-Lewis said he was deeply moved by Ledger's work in both Monster's Ball and Brokeback Mountain. Calling Ledger's performance in Brokeback Mountain both unique and perfect, Day-Lewis concluded his speech by dedicating his award to Ledger. "That scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen," said Day-Lewis.
