The Producers Guild of America named Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator" as the best film of 2004 at an awards ceremony held on January 22, 2005 in Los Angeles. "The Aviator" producers Michael Mann and Graham King accepted the award as producers of the year.

Scorsese's critically acclaimed biography of the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes has been gaining Oscar momentum and is considered to be one of the favorites to win Best Picture when the Academy announces its Oscar winners on February 27, 2005. A PGA win is one of the best barometers on how a movie will do at the Academy Awards, with 11 of the past 15 Producers Guild of America winners having gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

"The Aviator" was up against tough competition for the PGA's Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award. "The Aviator" won out over "The Incredibles," ""Sideways," "Million Dollar Baby," and "Finding Neverland."

In addition to handing out their annual award for the best film of the year, the Producers Guild of America honored Jeffrey Katzenberg with their Milestone Award. The Producers Guild has also selected Laura Ziskin as the recipient of this year's David O. Selznick Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures. John Wells received the David Susskind Achievement Award in Television. "Hotel Rwanda" and "Innocent Voices" are this year's winners of the Stanley Kramer Award.
