"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart will bring his sharp wit and edgy comedy style to the Academy Awards. Stewart has been named as the host of the 78th Academy Awards telecast, set for March 5, 2006 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. Last year's host, Chris Rock, is said to have turned down the offer of a repeat engagement.

Producer Gil Cates is a big fan of Stewart and "The Daily Show." "My wife and I watch him every night," Cates said. "Jon is the epitome of a perfect host — smart, engaging, irreverent and funny."

In a statement issued by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy President Sid Ganis said, "I'm very excited. Stewart is a superb choice — witty, current, intelligent and charming. What a terrific addition to our roster of great hosts!"

Stewart responded to the announcement by proclaiming himself a fan of the annual awards show. "As a performer, I’m truly honored to be hosting the show. Although, as an avid watcher of the Oscars, I can’t help but be a little disappointed with the choice. It appears to be another sad attempt to smoke out Billy Crystal."

Stewart's acting credits include "Death to Smoochy," "Big Daddy," "The Faculty" and "Playing by Heart." Stewart's also a best selling author. Along with the writers of "The Daily Show," Stewart penned "America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction." The book appeared on The New York times best seller list for 46 weeks and was recently awarded the Thurber Prize for American Humor.
