Movie Studios Will be Allowed to Advertise During the Oscars

The Academy Breaks Tradition and Allows Movie Ads

In a huge turnaround from their previous stance on the issue, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to allow movie ads to be broadcast during commercial breaks at the 81st Academy Awards (scheduled for February 22, 2009). Next year's ceremony will mark the first time trailers for movies have been allowed to air during the Oscars. The ban dates back to the very first televised Academy Awards ceremony in 1953.

The Academy's board of governors approved allowing movie ads, but set down very strict guidelines for studios to follow:

  • None of the nominated movies can be promoted;

  • No ads will be allowed for prequels or sequels to any of the nominated films;

  • Studios will not be able to run ads for any film currently in theaters at the time of the broadcast;

  • No film opening prior to the end of April will be allowed to advertise during the telecast;

  • Studios may only have one spot and can only promote one movie;

  • The words 'Academy Awards' or 'Oscar' can not be included in the ad.
