The New York Film Critics Circle Names "Brokeback Mountain" Best Picture of 2005

The New York Film Critics Circle selected "Brokeback Mountain" as the best movie of 2005 and chose the film's director, Ang Lee, as the winner of their best director award.

The New York Film Critics Circle has the distinction of being the oldest critical group in America, handing out awards for excellence in cinema for the past 71 years. The New York Film Critics Circle is made up of critics from daily and weekly newspapers and magazines based out of New York and is chaired by Newsday film critic Gene Seymour.

Best Picture - "Brokeback Mountain"

Best Director - Ang Lee, "Brokeback Mountain"

Best Actor - Heath Ledger, "Brokeback Mountain"

Best Actress - Reese Witherspoon, "Walk the Line"

Supporting Actor - William Hurt, "A History of Violence"

Supporting Actress - Maria Bello, "A History of Violence"

Cinematography - Christopher Doyle, Lai Yiu Fai and Kwan Pun Leung, "2046"

Best Screenplay - Noah Baumbach, "The Squid and the Whale"

Best Non-Fiction Films - "Grizzly Man" and "White Diamond"

Best Foreign Language Film - "2046"

Best First Film - Bennett Miller, "Capote"

Animated Feature - "Howl's Moving Castle"
