The ongoing Writers Guild strike put a real damper on the 2008 Golden Globes event. Instead of the normal star-studded ceremony, winners were announced at a news conference. Unless something drastic happens in the next few weeks, the Academy Awards ceremony could suffer the same fate as the Golden Globes.

The dramatic period piece Atonement went into the night with the most nominations, however the voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to spread the love around. Eight-time Golden Globe nominee Johnny Depp picked up his first win for his performance in Sweeney Todd, which captured the Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical award (a surprise win over favorites Juno and Hairspray). Four films tied with two wins each, while the rest of the awards in the motion picture categories were spread out amongst six other movies. In other words, no clear winner emerged from the most bizarre Golden Globes event in history.
