Directors Guild of America Names Ang Lee as the Best Director of 2005

The Directors Guild of America has proven to be one of the best barometers for who will win the Academy Award for Best Director. According to the DGA, there have only been six times in the Guild's history in which their award winner has not matched the Oscar winner.

On January 28, 2006, the Directors Guild of America announced their Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award winners, honoring work done in films and on TV during 2005. DGA President Michael Apted kicked the night off and then introduced Carl Reiner who hosted the awards ceremony for the 20th time (talk about your steady gigs...).

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film:
Winner: Ang Lee for "Brokeback Mountain" - This is Lee's second win and third DGA nomination. Director Lee won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement award for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," and was nominated for "Sense and Sensibility."

The Nominees:
George Clooney for "Good Night, and Good Luck" - This is Clooney's first DGA nomination.

Paul Haggis for "Crash" - This marks Haggis' first nomination for directorial achievement.

Bennett Miller for "Capote" - This is Miller's first nomination.

Steven Spielberg for "Munich" - This is Spielberg's 10th nomination. Spielberg won the directorial achievement award for "Saving Private Ryan," "Schindler's List," and "The Color Purple." He was also nominated for "Amistad," "Empire of the Sun," "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," " Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Jaws." In addition, Spielberg was awarded the DGA’s highest artistic honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award, in 2000.

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television:
Tie: Joseph Sargent, "Warm Springs"

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series Night:
Michael Apted, "Rome" - The Stolen Eagle Episode

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series:
Marc Buckland, "My Name is Earl" - Pilot Episode

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Musical Variety:
Matthew Diamond, "Great Performances: Dance in America," Swan Lake with American Ballet Theater

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Reality Programs:
Tie: Tony Croll, "Three Wishes" - Episode #1, Pilot
Tie: J Rupert Thompson, "Fear Factor" - Heist Fear Factor, Season 6 Premiere

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Daytime Serials:
Owen Renfroe, "General Hospital" - Episode #10914

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials:
