Emma Roberts Believes in Mermaids: Roberts did a research paper on mermaids and said she believes they could exist. Yeah, I believe, admits Roberts. Id like to, why not? Asked what she picked up in researching the creatures, Roberts said, Well, that people from different cultures and centuries have the same idea of what mermaids are, so thats kind of interesting. So maybe they did exist or do, so thats maybe a cool thing to think about.
As far as her attraction to Aquamarine, Roberts points out its been awhile since a mermaid was a central character in a movie. Obviously theres The Little Mermaid and Splash. There hadnt been a mermaid story in a while so I thought I really wanted to do something like that.
Roberts' Aquamarine co-star Sara Paxton is also a big fan of the legendary finned creatures. Sara loves mermaids. We saw a preview for the special edition of The Little Mermaid on DVD and she freaked out. She was like, I have to buy it! So yeah, shes pretty obsessed, said Roberts, adding, I loved mermaids. I would go to the beach and cover myself in the sand in a mermaid imprint. So yeah, I think every little girls dream is to be a mermaid or to see a mermaid.
Emma Roberts on Hanging Out with Her Aquamarine Co-Stars: We were in each others rooms all the time. We would go to the beach and we would ride bikes. I had a light purple one and JoJo had a red one and Sara would sit on the back of one of them. We would ride into town and go shopping or go eat.
Roberts had such a good time working on Aquamarine that shes unable to come up with her single favorite memory of the shoot. I cant choose just one; we all had a great time. In between takes we would just hang out. Probably one of the best parts was that Sara got to ride on the front of my handle bars in the movie, which was really difficult at first because Im probably the weakest one out of all of them. They were like, Yeah, Saras going to be on your bike. And I said, You mean, JoJos? And they said, No, yours, so we had to get lessons.
Coming up with the most difficult scene to shoot wasnt hard at all for Roberts. Scene 35. Yeah, I remember the number, really, it was the only number I knew. It was the first time when we see Aqua by the pool. We probably shot that scene for a week and a half or longer. We did every angle known to man times a hundred. It was really crazy, but it was a really important scene because it was when we first saw her. It was a night shoot so we were shooting late at night. It was really weird because the next week, we had morning shoots and I wouldnt be able to get to bed. Yeah, that was probably the longest scene.
Emma Roberts on Filming in Australia: It was great. Everyone is so laid back there. Me and Sara were joking around and she says, When they say no worries, they really mean it. They do, they are laid back and fun and really easy going. Its great. And then you come back to LA and its like, Hurry up, hurry up, hurry up.
All Three Stars of Aquamarine Share a Common Interest in Music: Roberts, Joanna JoJo Levesque and Sara Paxton are not only actresses, they also sing. Roberts said that although they all share a musical background, that didnt really come up in their conversations. Everyone asks us that. No, we didnt. All of us just kind of bonded on a normal teenage girl level and never really talked about that. Obviously, were all fans of each other. JoJo had just finished her music video, so they sent it to her and we all watched it together. That was really great. So yeah, were all fans of each other, so its cool.
Emma Roberts on Covering the Weezer Song Island in the Sun: Its funny because in Australia we had to shoot the Last Splash scene and that was the song that was playing so we probably heard that song about a hundred times. I got back to LA and they asked if I wanted to sing that song. I was like, Yeah, I guess. I had heard it a trillion times so I know it by heart already. I got into the studio and I had so much fun doing it. I love the song; I like Weezer so it was cool.
