Brie Larson Discusses Her Music Career and Future Plans

By Rebecca Murray, About.com

After co-starring in the teen comedy "Sleepover," Brie Larson is next set to tackle the music industry as she launches her singing career.

While at the World Premiere of another teen movie - "A Cinderella Story" starring Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray - I spoke to Brie Larson about her music and the possibility of mixing her acting and singing careers.

INTERVIEW WITH BRIE LARSON:

What’s happening with your singing career?
You know what? I’m actually incredibly lucky just to have a record deal just because the record industry is kind of dying down right now, because of CD burning and stuff like that. I think I’ve been really lucky to have this opportunity and I’m really taking control of it. I’m so lucky also to have a record label who is really letting me be creative with it. A lot of labels are more like, “No, this is what you’re doing.” I’m just so lucky that I get along so well with them. We hang out all the time.

I write the music so I kind of have a lot more control over it, which is nice. Image-wise – this is just who I am. (Laughing) I can’t be anybody else.

You can’t be 'Christina' or 'Britney?'
(Laughing). No. You know what? I know that I’m an actor and I guess I could kind of put on [an act], but it takes so much more time to be someone you are not. I feel so much better just being comfortable with myself and hopefully girls will accept that.

I heard you've said you will not sing on film. Why?
As in movie-wise? I don’t know. I think that it’s something right now that I’m trying to keep totally separate. I think that if I do get the opportunity, I probably would, just because I think it would be fun to do like a big production number, you know? That would be so cool. But I think right now I’m really focusing on the music and trying to keep it simple. I don’t want to dilute it and make it about big production numbers and all that. It’s really more of an acoustic rock feel. I want girls to listen to it and take me more seriously as a music artist than as someone who is trying to copy Hilary Duff or Lindsay Lohan and all these other people who are doing it.

Since you're here at the premiere of "A Cinderella Story," here's a question in keeping with the theme of the film: Do you have someone you consider to be your fairy godmother?
I have so many people who I call my ‘second mom.’ My school teacher from my first show that I did when I was like 11 years old. I still keep in touch with her. I’m actually going to go see her on Friday. She’s like – if anything were to happen to my mom and my family – she would be right there. Same with my aunt. I’m so lucky because my aunt just moved in right next door to me, which is the most amazing experience ever. If anyone gets the chance to do that, they should do it. It’s like the coolest thing ever. She’s also my fairy godmother. She loves me like I’m her daughter.
