Guide Review - '30 Days of Night' DVD Review
The StoryAs the residents of the town of Barrow, Alaska begin the annual period of 30 days without sunshine, a pack of bloodthirsty vampires descend on the small town looking for easy eats. Without fear of sunshine disturbing their hunt for food, the vampires attack the unsuspecting folks of Barrow, killing without remorse and leaving the streets soaked in blood.
A small group of Barrow's citizens, led by Sheriff Eben Oleson (Josh Hartnett) and his estranged wife, Stella (Melissa George), are among those lucky enough to have escaped the initial onslaught. Taking refuge inside buildings and waiting out the endless nights seems to be the only way to survive, but even that course of action has its drawbacks. Now it's up to Sheriff Oleson to keep his people from becoming victims of the savage vampires.
The Bonus Features
The 30 Days of Night DVD is packed with extras including a commentary track from Hartnett, George, and producer Rob Tapert. The threesome don't just pat each other (and their co-stars and director) on the back, but actually offer up quite a few interesting tidbits about the making of the film.
The DVD bonus material is stuffed with behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing every step of the filmmaking process. Everything from building the town of Barrow to creating the creatures to performing the stunts to how the cast was chosen and how the film captured the cold, metallic look are discussed in a series of featurettes. If it took place on the set or was instrumental in bringing the story to life on the big screen, then it's highlighted in the extensive collection of extra features.
