Catherine Hardwicke and Melissa Rosenberg Interviews
Twilight Director Catherine Hardwicke
It's here. Can you believe the reaction of these fans? Some of them have been here since 5:00 last night.Catherine Hardwicke: "Dude, I was here all night – I mean for a couple of hours. I signed everybody, jumped on the sleeping bags with everybody. It was fun."
Did you expect them to be camping out overnight?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Uh, yeah I did because I knew from the first moment I knew that people loved this book. They're just crazy about it. There's like passion for this book, so yeah, I did."
Did you ever feel that way about anything when you were that age, when you were younger? Did you feel that way about a book or a movie or anything?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Well, I felt that way about a boy – a real boy."
Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg
You look so gorgeous.Melissa Rosenberg: "Thank you. It's fun dressing up."
Screenwriters never get to do this.
Melissa Rosenberg: "We don't. We just never do and so I took full advantage. "
What's your normal writing attire?
Melissa Rosenberg: "Sweats that have a lot of dog hair on them. My hair all unwashed. It's a look. My husband loves it."
How long did it take you to adapt this?
Melissa Rosenberg: "You know, it was a very rush process because we were fighting the writers strike. We had to get it done before the writers strike because I was going to go out on the picket line. So it was about a month to outline it, and I do most of my work in an outline – real detailed. And then they said, 'Okay, well now you've got five weeks to write the screenplay.' I said, 'Five weeks? You can't write a screenplay in five weeks!' And they said, 'Well, you want to get it made?' I went, 'Okay, I'm going to write a screenplay …' And you can do that if you do nothing else. You don't shower, you don't pet the dog, you don't eat. Your husband brings you snacks, you know? So yeah, I was looking really good then. He's delighted to see this. He's like, 'Oh my god!'"
So with New Moon are they going to give you more time or have you already done it?
Melissa Rosenberg: "That's all in talks right now. We're going to wait and see what's happening with this weekend. But I would imagine if they want to move forward, they probably want to do it fast."
These guys aren't getting any younger and they have to play vampires.
Melissa Rosenberg: "And vampires don't age."
Was it difficult to bring this one to the screen because there are so many millions of fans and they know every line from this?
Melissa Rosenberg: "I imagine that was harder for Catherine the director because for me I actually didn't know about the fan base when I started. I began to find out a little bit about it and I stopped looking because I just didn't want to be overwhelmed. So it was like me in my little house with my computer and giving Catherine pages and getting notes back. But as I finished it and we were moving forward, then I started…"
These guys have been waiting out here since last night. Was there anything growing up that you felt that passionately about?
Melissa Rosenberg: "Music. Yeah, there were certain musicians."
Do you remember any one?
Melissa Rosenberg: "Well, oddly, Joni Mitchell. I would have waited for just because I just love her music so much. She moves me so deeply. Particularly at that time in my life I was a huge Joni Mitchell fan. "
Do you listen to music now when you're doing screenplays?
Melissa Rosenberg: "I really don't because I don't want it to - unless I'm doing an action scene or a dance scene or something like that - because I don't want it to influence the mood. Particularly on this I wanted to stay in close relationship with the book and I didn't want to have a lot of outside influences that were going to shift me away from Stephenie's voice and her storytelling."
