New Moon
Edi Gathegi Interview
Exclusive Interview with Edi Gathegi
Edi Gathegi: "I love About. I love About."You do? How much do you love About?
Edi Gathegi: "I love About about this much. It was so big it couldn't be contained in this frame, that's how much About I love."
That's awesome. And New Moon…have you seen the script yet? Is there a script?
Edi Gathegi: "There is a script. I haven't seen it yet but I heard it's really good and I heard it keeps getting better. And there's fuzzies in my eye-zies. But I heard that I'm going to have some really fun stuff to do in New Moon. "
Fun stuff, more so than was in the book?
Edi Gathegi: "No, no, no, I wouldn't go that far. I will say that funner than Twilight, and Twilight was fun."
So you're ready for the dreads?
Edi Gathegi: "Yeah, I'm ready to rock those out again."
But what about changing the director? Are you okay?
Edi Gathegi: "Yeah, I'm okay with that because I think she's okay with that. I think it was like a mutual decision. I haven't had a chance to talk to her so I don't know what's going on. I know that Chris [Weitz] is amazing. I haven't had a chance to meet him yet but his track record is so beautiful. His career as a director is like what I want my career as an actor to be, so diverse. He's done comedy with American Pie and then About a Boy and then Golden Compass which is completely… And that Golden Compass gives him like the credibility really to do a huge project like this so I'm excited about that."
Excellent. What else are you working on?
Edi Gathegi: "Right now I'm working on a pilot called Operating Instructions. It's a naval hospital show; it's great. I play a doctor. And the cast is so brilliant. I was at the table read the other day and at the table, these actors were bringing A game. I was like, literally, this is the thought that I had, 'You're all trying to win a Golden Globe. This is a table read - easy outshining us.'"
Did you tell them that?
Edi Gathegi: "Yeah, I did actually. I was like, 'You guys are great. I can't believe I'm part of this.'"
Who's in it?
Edi Gathegi: "Christine Lahti is in it. Johnny Sneed, he used to be a lawyer, now he's an actor. Emily Rose is the lead in it. She plays the female doctor who's brought in because she's genius. Assaf Cohen, he's like one of my new best friends now. Who else is in it? Amy Garcia…it's a great, great, great cast. And then I just booked a Broadway show. What???"
Could you be any busier?
Edi Gathegi: "We have to figure out if it's going to work with New Moon so we're still trying to figure out dates. But I would love to be on Broadway."
Singing and dancing or what is it?
Edi Gathegi: "No, straight play. I don't do singing and dancing. Nah."
It'd be fun. It'd be something different.
Edi Gathegi: "Yeah, but you know for fun. I wouldn't do it on Broadway for 6, 8 shows a week for 2 years. I'm just not that talented."
Yes you are. Do you really want to take that much time and be on stage?
Edi Gathegi: "Yeah, for a good show, and that's August Wilson. August Wilson is my favorite playwright."
Are you at all concerned that they're going to be rushing New Moon because they're starting in March, putting it out in November, it's an effects-heavy movie – more so than Twilight? You don't think it's rushed?
Edi Gathegi: "They got world class people behind this. It's not rushing at all. Editor's top notch…I mean everybody, I don't know who they got for the CGI team, but I know they got the best because Chris Weitz works with the best. Yeah, let's dispel that rumor. It's not being rushed because I think we got people who are capable of producing…"
