Catherine Hardwicke Interview
Twilight Director Catherine Hardwicke
I'm a huge Twilight fan so tell me how you're going to please me.
Catherine Hardwicke: "Okay, first, I am a huge Twilight fan. I love the book. I just got totally swept away in this great obsessive love story, so I wanted to feel that when I watched the movie. I wanted to take all the cool things that we love in the book and then make them even more visual, more physical because of course it's not the same as reading a book. So we just tried to bring it alive and make it like cinematically stunning for you guys."
Did you feel all that extra weight on your shoulders knowing that every move you make is going to be analyzed?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Well, what I think… It helped in a way because when you'd be up there on top of a mountain freezing in the middle of the night, and then you'd see Twilight fans there, it's like, 'Okay, these people care, man. I've got to do it great.' So in a way, it's like helpful. It lifts us up and gets us excited that you guys are excited."
And people are saying this is like in Harry Potter stratosphere. Do you think that?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Well, not in the budget. We got the baby budget and we hope that as many people love it as love Harry Potter. I mean, it's different, but it's got something that Harry Potter doesn't have. It's got the great romance and just sexual tension – and a lot of kind of cool action, too."
Did they sign you for more?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Well, it's all these kind of like complicated contracts. 'Blah, blah, blah, if it makes this much money on this…'"
Like there's any question of how much it's going to make.
Catherine Hardwicke: "We've got our fingers crossed."
Were you happy with the move of the release date?
Catherine Hardwicke: "Well, I was nervous because suddenly I had to get everything done three weeks earlier. And I'm still working on the final mix and everything."
How close are you?
Catherine Hardwicke: "We're very close. I think within a week I'm basically done. Yeah."
And we're looking at a two hour running time?
Catherine Hardwicke: "With the credits it is two hours."
How do you feel about the buzz surrounding the film?
Catherine Hardwicke: "It is kind of surprising that it's getting so much love and so much attention, so we just hope that people show up and buy tickets."
