Thandie Newton and Joel Silver Interviews
Thandie Newton ('Stella')
What was it like on this mostly male set?
Thandie Newton: "Oh, lovely, gorgeous, these beautiful men, beautiful men who are also by the way really sensitive, really sweet. They're playing these hardass anti-social criminals but in reality they're actors who are very in touch with their feminine sides and their sensitivity. It was like hanging out with like the best girlfriends. I was the hardass."
And working with Guy Ritchie?
Thandie Newton: "Lovely. I'd do it a movie a year please with Guy Ritchie. He's just very straightforward. There's no fuss, gets on with it. He doesn't pander to your every whim, but at the same time he doesn't disrespect you. It's just very honest - very, very honest, straightforward. And I just found that in that environment where I felt so respected and so appreciated, I just was much more creative. I'd come to work with ideas. He'd either accept them or not. I mean it sounds like any director would be like this, but there's just something different about Guy. I just think that there's just no ego, no ego at all in the way he works."
"He is the strongest personality that I've ever met. I think people that swing their weight around and their authority around are the people that are the weakest people – the people with the weakest ego. I think someone who is incredibly confident in themselves lets you get on with your job, and expects you to get on with your job."
And there will be sequels?
Thandie Newton: "Yes, there will. I hope there will be many. He wants to make three. He's written the second one already."
Are you in it?
Thandie Newton: "I think I am, yeah. I think I am. You wouldn't think so from watching the film though."
Producer Joel Silver
What is so cool about working with Guy Ritchie as a filmmaker?
Joel Silver: "He's a smart guy, knows what he wants, knows what he wants to do. He has a great vibe, a great sense of the movie. I mean his movies have a great attitude and I think that, you know, he really makes something special. I really like seeing the pictures."
And Sherlock Holmes?
Joel Silver: "It's going to be great."
What can we expect? Action?
Joel Silver: "It's a full action movie. I mean it's like a James Bond film from 1891. It has a Butch and Sundance kind of quality between Jude [Law] as Dr Watson and [Robert] Downey as Sherlock Holmes. It's going to be a really fun, great picture. "
And it's practical effects? Not a lot of CGI, right?
Joel Silver: "Not that much. A little bit but not that much. It's what you'd expect from that period."
