Jay Hernandez Interview
Jay Hernandez ('Jake') in Quarantine
So tell me about working on this, particularly shooting it in order. How does that affect you?
Jay Hernandez: "Shooting in sequence is something you don't often get to do and it works, especially for something like this because the levels of anxiety and fear and all that sort of fluctuate and change. And from day to day you know exactly where you left off and where you have to go. And just being in sequence like that makes it a lot easier."
Does it let you change things? Can you play a little bit more?
Jay Hernandez: "Well, you can... There was a lot of freedom, there was a lot of improv in this because there's one thing to rehearse these scenes but the way it's shot is very theatrical. It's like everything has to go down and it all has to work in one shot. So you rehearse it and it looks like one thing, but when everyone's losing their minds and things are going on and people are dying, and the energy is way up here, things change. So you had to be ready, everybody has to be ready and sort of on the money every time. So it was very interesting."
How do you get that energy level way up there?
Jay Hernandez: "It's hard. It's really hard. You know, I just try to connect with fear that I felt in my past and sort of go there psychologically. And in addition to that, it helps - all the other actors - because it's like this hive of activity. Once they say, 'Action,' everybody goes. Everyone is like losing their minds, and so that helps - that sort of frenetic energy that everyone is carrying around."
Did you see the original film?
Jay Hernandez: "I did."
How do they compare?
Jay Hernandez: "I think they're pretty similar. I really like the Spanish version. That's one of the reasons why I did this film because I liked it so much and I figured if they're going to do a version and it's half as good as this, it's probably something that's worth doing for me."
And you've got a bunch of projects coming up. You're filming right now Bone Deep... It's not really called Bone Deep though, is it?
Jay Hernandez: "I think the name's going to change but yeah, right now it's Bone Deep."
That's a heist movie?
Jay Hernandez: "It's a heist movie. I'm playing a detective, me and Matt Damon are trying to... Matt Damon...Matt Dillon are trying to take down this crew of bank robbers. I actually just came, I got off work a little while ago to get over here so I'm like dead tired."
Firefighter, detective, you like those kind of roles?
Jay Hernandez: "I've got a holiday movie coming out. It's called Nothing Like the Holidays."
But you're not a firefighter or detective in it?
Jay Hernandez: "No, no, no. I'm not saving anybody in this one."
What is it?
Jay Hernandez: "It's a family sort of drama about people coming together after many years, and all the sort of dynamics of that."
