Harold Russell, a disabled World War II veteran. The Academy Governors, not knowing the outcome of the Best Supporting Actor race of 1946, presented a special Oscar to him for bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans through his appearance in "The Best Years of Our Lives." Later in the evening he also won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the same performance.
