Should the Winners Have Won?

Hollywood stars of the past and present were dressed to the hilt for the 2001 Academy Awards ceremony, March 25th. Gone this year was the "bedroom hair" look, and back was the look of class, style and elegance. Hosting for the first time, Steve Martin kept the entertainers and television audience entertained with his own inimitable style of stand-up comedy. The evening flowed smoothly, almost effortlessly, with Martin playing a huge role in keeping everything under control. Award winners were bribed with the promise of a High Definition Television as the prize for the shortest acceptance speech, and seldom did the orchestra have to start the music to move the winners off the stage.

Romance fans didn't get to see Chocolat or Juliette Binoche take home an Oscar, but at least we can take solace in the fact that the little romance film was even nominated. While Chocolat went without, Traffic and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were each honored with four awards. Gladiator proved to be the night's big winner, bagging five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor.
