The Best Films About Weddings
It's amazing how many films feature weddings as a major element. This list was tougher to narrow down than I originally thought. These finalists all had one thing in common, besides weddings. They're all extremely entertaining films with great writing, outstanding performances, and lots of romance.
1) "My Best Friend's Wedding" (Special Edition)
Best friends Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) and Michael O'Neil (Dermot Mulroney) make a pact to marry if they are still single at age 28. Guess what age Julianne's about to turn? Cameron Diaz co-stars as Michael's fiancée who has the unenviable task of competing with Julianne for Michael's love. The DVD features an incredible collection of bonus features including helpful wedding hints, a sing-along, and a couple of "Making Of" featurettes.
2) "Four Weddings and a Funeral"
"Four Weddings and a Funeral" received a much deserved Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. An amazing cast, a tight, intelligent script, and an amusing storyline make "Four Weddings and a Funeral" a must-see/must-own romantic comedy.
3) "Betsy's Wedding"
Alan Alda wrote and starred in this romantic comedy. Betsy (Molly Ringwald) has to overcome dealings with the mob, a wedding that's spinning out of control, and a police officer sister who's falling in love with a member of the Mafia.
4) "Father of the Bride"
Steve Martin stars as the father of the bride in this remake of Vincente Minnelli's 1950 classic. Martin is terrific as the loving - but penny-pinching - father who learns to let go of his little girl. Diane Keaton co-stars as the mother of the bride, and Martin Short is hilarious as the wedding planner.
5) "Muriel's Wedding"
Toni Collette won rave reviews for her portrayal of a woman who yearns for love and a more exciting life. If you've never seen this film, prepare yourself - there's a lot of ABBA music included in the movie, and even an ABBA music video on the DVD.
6) "Runaway Bride"
No, this isn't about Julia's real love life. "Runaway Bride" reunites "Pretty Woman" co-stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere in a cute tale about a woman with commitment issues. Gere plays a reporter sent to get the true story on Julia's many incomplete wedding ceremonies.
7) "In & Out"
Kevin Kline is engaged to marry Joan Cusack but the wedding may not go on as planned. The problem? He's not sure if he's gay. Tom Selleck plays a reporter who is interested in more than just getting a story.
8) "The Wedding Singer"
The "Wedding Singer" is an irresistible romantic comedy, teaming Adam Sandler with Drew Barrymore, and featuring a classic cameo by rocker, Billy Idol. Set in the mid-1980s, the film features some of the same music you hoped you'd never hear again, but in this film, it doesn't seem as bad as you remembered. The DVD's karaoke versions of "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" and "White Wedding" might actually have you longing for the 80s.
