Guide Picks - Top Romantic Sports Movies
There are scores of great sports films, and hundreds of outstanding love stories, but not a great many that mix the two. The following list features some of my favorite films that effectively blend the love of sports with love for the opposite sex.
1) "Bull Durham"
Mixing smart dialogue with an entertaining storyline, 1998's "Bull Durham" is my top choice of movies that mix romance and sports. You won't find better come-on lines than in this baseball love story. Kevin Costner teams with Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins in this highly entertaining romantic film that men and women will equally enjoy.
2) "The Natural"
Robert Redford and Glenn Close star in Barry Levinson's 1984 baseball drama, "The Natural." Ranked by many critics as one of the best over-all sports movies ever made, "The Natural" is a moving tale of love and what happens when one man follows his dreams.
3) "Ice Castles"
A bit sappy, but a great tale of love and ice skating nonetheless, "Ice Castles" stars Lynn-Holly Johnson as an aspiring world-class ice skater. A very young Robbie Benson co-stars as the boy who helps her keep her dream alive after an accident causes her to lose her ability to see.
4) "Rocky"
It's hard to believe it's been more than 25 years since the original "Rocky" premiered in theatres. Sylvester Stallone makes his first appearance as fictional boxer, Rocky Balboa, in this first (and best) of the five "Rocky" films. Talia Shire co-stars as the love of his life, Adrian.
5) "Breaking Away"
Four local boys take on rich college kids in this 1979 Academy Award-winning movie. Featuring cycling, a love for the Italian language, and the quest to win over a beautiful college girl, this is a wonderful film about friendship, loyalty, and letting go.
