It's amazing how many good romantic movies were released during 2000 and 2001. Movie studios seemed to actually listen and respond to moviegoers' requests for more romance in films. The following DVDs were selected to represent the best of what the new millennium has to offer, to date.
1) "Moulin Rouge"
One of my personal favorites, "Moulin Rouge" is available on video/DVD on December 18, 2001 - just in time for the holidays. Along with an enthusiastic soundtrack, "Moulin Rouge" is the best romantic musical to come along in decades. Packed with extras, this special edition DVD includes 6+ hours of interesting bonus features.
2) "Shrek"
"Shrek" is one of the most enjoyable romantic comedies to come out in years. It doesn't matter in the least that the love story exists between a big green ogre and a princess with a secret, this film is one that the entire family will enjoy. The DVD includes an extended ending, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and much more.
3) "A Knight's Tale"
This wild tale mixing jousting and classic rock songs proves to be even more entertaining on DVD. "A Knight's Tale" has the added attraction of being a movie that men as well as women will love to watch over and over again. Loaded with extra features, this DVD makes a great addition to any DVD collection.
4) "Pearl Harbor" 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition DVD
This special two disc set comes with a behind-the-scenes "Making Of" documentary that provides insight into the research and attention to detail director Michael Bay attempted to adhere to while filming "Pearl Harbor." The DVD also includes an educational History Channel featurette with newsreel footage from 1941, and interviews with Pearl Harbor survivors.
5) "Almost Famous" (Untitled): The Bootleg Cut - Director's Edition
This special extended version of Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous" is was released on December 4, 2001 and includes enough extra material to satisfy any "Almost Famous" fan. New material on the DVD includes a director's cut of the film with 30+ minutes of never-before-seen footage.
6) "Bridget Jones's Diary"
Not just a "chick flick," the film adaptation of Helen Fielding's book features wonderful performances by Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth. Zellweger tackles a British accent, weight gain, drinking and chain-smoking with style and humor.
7) "Legally Blonde"
Reese Witherspoon is beautiful, intelligent, and most of all, blonde, in this cute romantic comedy. "Legally Blonde" is entertaining fun for the entire family.
8) "Heartbreakers"
Sigourney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt star as mother/daughter con-artists, who fall in love with two of the men they're out to swindle. The "Heartbreakers" DVD includes a feature showcasing just how much fun this movie was to film.
9) "Meet the Parents"
This DVD is worth it just for the opportunity to watch DeNiro lose it while filming his scenes with Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller. This romantic comedy gem was so well-received, a sequel is currently in the works.
10) "America's Sweethearts"
The DVD doesn't offer much in the way of special features, but the movie is enjoyable enough that it hardly matters. John Cusack and Julia Roberts are wonderful in what I believe is one of the best romantic comedies of 2001.
