Guide Review
"Serendipity" DVD Review/Recommendation
John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale star in this entertaining, light-hearted, romantic comedy. Kate's character describes 'serendipity' as a fortunate accident and that's the premise of this film. 'Fate' plays a co-starring role as two strangers - Jonathan and Sara - meet by accident while shopping for Christmas gifts. The two instantly hit it off but are already involved in serious relationships. Despite their existing relationships, they spend 8 hours getting to know each other. Sara is a strong believer in fate and calls all the shots during their evening together. Refusing to directly give Jonathan her phone number (after an initial exchange of info is disrupted by a gust of wind), Sara tells Jonathan to write his name and number on a $5 bill which she immediately spends. Sara, in turn, writes her name and number in a book that Jonathan must hunt down from a used bookstore. Declaring that if they were meant to be together, the money and/or the book would wind up back in their hands, Sara and Jonathan part company. Years go by with no contact until Jonathan and Sara (each on the verge of marriage) renew their search to find out if they were indeed meant to be together.

“Serendipity” is a really sweet movie, but not sickeningly so. Backed by an uplifting soundtrack and filled with great acting (Jeremy Piven and Molly Shannon are terrific as Jonathan and Sara's best friends), “Serendipity” makes a great date movie that even men will enjoy.
