"Pearl Harbor" DVD Review/Recommendation
"Pearl Harbor" tells the story of two childhood friends, Rafe (Ben Affleck) and Danny (Josh Hartnett) whose shared passion for flying leads to careers in the United States Air Force. Stationed together, the two maintain their loyalty and friendship while the world becomes caught up in war. Kate Beckinsale co-stars as Evelyn, a nurse who falls first for Rafe, and then for Danny. Romance guides the film, weaving a love story while the bombing of Pearl Harbor and its subsequent actions providing a historical backdrop.
The 60th Anniversary Commemorative Edition DVD Two-Disc set comes packed in a faux, weathered book jacket-style case. The picture and sound quality of the DVD transfer gorgeously to the small screen, losing little of their theatrical quality. "Pearl Harbor's" DVD bonus features are an educational yet entertaining mix of historical background on the events of December 7, 1941, and behind-the-scenes "Making of" footage, providing in-depth insight into the making of the film. The 45+ minute-long "Journey to the Screen" featurette contains interviews with the cast and crew, actual Pearl Harbor survivors, and U.S.S. Arizona facts. The narrated documentary provides a glimpse into the research that went into the filming of "Pearl Harbor," highlighting director Michael Bay's use of eyewitnesses, and the cooperation of the U.S. Navy, to ensure historical accuracy.
The History Channel's "Unsung Heroes" documentary is an incredibly moving tribute to Pearl Harbor's heroes. Mixing black and white newsreel footage and still photos with sweeping views of Pearl Harbor in its current state, the History Channel brings to life that day which will live in infamy.
