The Bottom Line -
John Stockwell brings his own style of filmmaking to "crazy/beautiful," an unflinchingly honest look at class differences. This is not your typical high school teen romance, and it probably won't appeal to everyone, but it may find an audience in more mature high schoolers looking for a film that portrays actual relationship problems.

"crazy/beautiful" DVD Review/Recommendation
Newcomer Jay Hernandez steals this film as Carlos, a lower-income straight "A" student and star football player. Kirsten Dunst co-stars as Nicole, the spoiled, self-destructive daughter of a wealthy Pacific Palisades congressman. From opposite sides of the tracks, the two are drawn to each other despite their vast differences in social class and moral character. Ultimately, Carlos is forced to give up on Nicole or abandon his carefully planned out future.
"crazy/beautiful's" DVD allows viewers to gain a greater insight into John Stockwell's work. His diligence at bringing to the screen real students in real life situations is evident as he discusses the casting process and his final choices for the three key supporting roles. "Blurring Fiction & Reality" - a behind the scenes "making of" featurette - is a better than average, informative look into the casting process and into Stockwell's style of filmmaking.
