"Birthday Girl" DVD Review/Recommendation
Nicole Kidman stars as Nadia, a Russian mail-order bride who arrives in America unable to speak English and chain-smoking her way to an early grave. Ben Chaplin co-stars as John, a mild-mannered bank employee who sent away for Nadia hoping for an English-speaking non-smoker.
Nadia might not be able to communicate verbally, however sexually, she and John have no problems speaking the same language. As John becomes more and more infatuated with his bride-to-be, Nadia's springs a few more surprises on her unsuspecting British companion, including a visit from her gregarious cousin and his actor/musician buddy.
But nothing - and no one - in "Birthday Girl" is as it seems. John's life spins totally out of control as he becomes involved in one unpredictable plot twist after another.
Ben Chaplin and Nicole Kidman play well off of each other, and Kidman does a brilliant job of becoming a Russian mail-order bride. Sexy, edgy and entertaining, "Birthday Girl" is a dark romantic comedy that both sexes will enjoy.
