Sarah Michelle Gellar ("Scooby Doo") and Jack Black ("Shallow Hal") hosted a night filled with song and dance at the 2002 MTV Movie Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Black and Gellar opened the event dressed as popcorn and had the star-studded audience involved in a sing-along, with special performances by Andy Garcia and Brittany Murphy.

Besides the opening short film parody of "Spider-Man" and a spoof on "Lord of the Rings" titled "Lord of the Piercing," the 2002 MTV Movie Awards featured performances by Eminem, The White Stripes, and the debut performance of Ozzy Osbourne's daughter Kelly who sang her cover of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach."

Presenters for the event included Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale, Bow Wow, Nicolas Cage, Linda Cardellini, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, Eve, Jennifer Garner, Eddie Griffin, Katie Holmes, Johnny Knoxville, Matthew Lillard, Ewan McGregor, Bridget Moynahan, Brittany Murphy, Mike Myers, Natalie Portman, Franka Potente, Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Rock, Winona Ryder, Adam Sandler, Will Smith, Hilary Swank, and Charlize Theron.
