SHAWN HATOSY ['Jim')

You play one of Jason Lee's character's best friends. How instrumental are you in helping him decide which girl to wind up with?
I give him the wrong advice. In fact, I encourage to him have sex. I am not fully responsible for what he does - ultimately the guy makes his own decisions - but I'm constantly giving him the wrong advice.

Which girl would you be drawn to - the wild one or the more reserved girl?
I don't know. There would have to be some sort of spark.

How does this film separate itself from other romantic comedies?
The amazing thing about this movie is it could have very easily - not to take anything away from the writing, because I think it was good - but in that genre, it could have gone and become a very typical teenage comedy. Chris [Koch's] vision was just always a little bit off. It keeps you guessing at all times. It's not easy to do, and it's not easy to make people laugh like that. That's what he specializes in. It's kind of quirky, and it's not quite what you'd expect.

Was there much improv on the set? Did Chris Koch allow the actors much freedom?
Yes. If something wasn't working, then yes he did.

What stands out for you about making this film?
I haven't done a lot of comedies and it was just nice to be challenged - not that you have to try to be funny - but in a situation with a comedy, it's just a little bit more difficult. You all have a common goal.

Can you talk about your role in the upcoming release, "Dallas and Rusty?"
"Dallas and Rusty" is a film that Scott Caan - who is a young actor - wrote and directed, and also starred in. It's kind of a coming-of-age story about two friends figuring out what the rest of their lives are going to be like together.

Is it different working for an actor about your own age as the director?
I initially thought it might be but after spending a lot of time with Scott, I realized that it didn't make any difference. He's just really good at what he does. He's really bright and really smart. As it turns out, he is one of the best directors I've ever worked with.

Really?
Yes. He's really very, very good.

LOCHLYN MUNRO ('Ray')

Tell me about 'Ray.'
He's a little crazy. You know, he's a bit corrupt but trying to find his way. He really wants Julia's character back because they are ex-fiancées. He thinks that Jason is the one that's fooling around with her. So he goes about things the wrong way and finally has to pay the consequences. But I think in a certain way, he's just crying out for help.

Was there anything you called on in your own life to help you get into this character?
No, not really. It's fun to play the corrupt characters because I find myself so boringly non-corrupt.

Is it much better to play the bad guy?
Oh yeah, definitely.
