HFPA and the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes are thought to be a good barometer of the direction the Academy Awards will take, with films that make a good showing at the Globes often coming out on top at the Oscars. This year, the Golden Globes did nothing but further muddy up the Oscar picture.

Though "Chicago" emerged as the overall winner with three Golden Globes, "The Hours," "Adaptation," "Gangs of New York," and "About Schmidt" - all critic and film society favorites - each captured two awards, putting the race for the Academy Award for Best Picture up for grabs. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" may have been the only film to get their odds of winning an Academy Award reduced by the end of the Globes' three hour ceremony.
