Ryan Reynolds stars as Van Wilder, a college student on the 7-years-and-counting plan. He's the ultimate big man on campus, looked up to by students of all social classes and groups. His only problem appears to be his lack of desire to move on, to actually go out on his own into the big, cruel world. Tara Reid co-stars as Gwen Pearson, an intrepid reporter for the school newspaper. Her editor demands an article on Van Wilder and it's up to Gwen to corner the man and drag out his story. Played with raunchy good nature, Reynolds' Van Wilder is a player with a heart. He takes care of the school's 'sick boy,' organizes parties for the underdog fraternities, and raises money for the school's assorted charities. He does all this with the assistance of an assistant - a job sought after by all the school's newbies. Taj Mahal Badalandabad (Kal Penn) beat out all comers to land the prized position and he takes his job very, very seriously. After Van has his college tuition cut off by his dad, it's up to Van, Taj Mahal, and their closest friends to make up the tuition and keep Van in school.
In the tradition and style of "National Lampoon's Animal House," "Van Wilder" has its sick and twisted parts, as well as its genuinely engaging segments. "Van Wilder" doesn't pull any punches with its gross-out humor. Fortunately, the jokes hit more often than they miss. "National Lampoon's Van Wilder's" Unrated DVD version contains scenes that weren't included in the theatrical release as well as a menu that allows you to choose between censored and uncensored bonus footage introductions. While the film's not for everyone, it's definitely right on target for its audience of choice - college students and teenaged boys.
