"The Majestic" is director Frank Darabont's salute to Frank Capra and his films. Jim Carrey stars as Peter Appleton, a Hollywood screenwriter who is accused of being a communist. After his B-actress girlfriend leaves him and he loses his job, Appleton takes solace in alcohol, flees Hollywood, and gets into a serious car accident that leaves him with amnesia. Discovered laying on the beach wounded and unable to recall who he is or how he got there, Appleton's taken in by the kind people who inhabit a tiny California town. Things get more complicated when he's mistaken for Luke Trimble, a World World II hero - and son of the town's theater owner - who was thought to have been killed in the war. Peter/Luke falls in love with the town and with Adele (Laurie Holden), the woman who was Luke's girlfriend. As his memory returns, Peter is forced to decide whether to stand up for himself and to discover if he's brave enough to follow his heart.
"The Majestic's" DVD is short on extra features and commentary. If you enjoyed the movie in the theatre or you're a Jim Carrey fan who never caught it during its big screen release, then the DVD version won't be a disappointment. The lack of bonus features and director commentary may keep DVD fans from purchasing the film, however the movie itself is definitely entertaining and worth spending a couple of hours with.
