Revolution Studios' horror/thriller "Darkness Falls" opened #1 at the box office last weekend, grossing $12,024,917. The film, which stars Emma Caulfield, Chaney Kley and Lee Cormie, is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by John Hegeman, John Fasano, William Sherak and Jason Shuman. "Darkness Falls" is distributed by Columbia Pictures.
"This is a fantastic way to open the new year, which will be our most impressive to date," said Revolution Studios Partner Tom Sherak. "This is a home-grown production by first-time producers and a first-time director, and we could not be happier with the results. It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to work with such up-and-coming talent."
"Our audience loved this film," added Terry Curtin, head of marketing and distribution for Revolution Studios. "The PG-13 rating allowed for a broad range of moviegoers and we expect that it will continue to play well. We grossed the negative cost in our first weekend."
"The performance of 'Darkness Falls' exceeded our most enthusiastic expectations for the film and we couldn't be more pleased with its opening," said Geoff Ammer, president of worldwide marketing for Columbia Pictures. "To deliver these kind of numbers during the Super Bowl weekend is really extraordinary and it says a lot about the accessibility and playability of this film."
In "Darkness Falls," Kyle Walsh (Chaney Kley) must return home to confront his troubled past and save his childhood sweetheart Caitlin (Emma Caulfield) and her younger brother Michael (Lee Cormie) from an unrelenting evil that has plagued the town of Darkness Falls for over one hundred and fifty years.
Revolution Studios was formed by Joe Roth in May 2000 to independently produce and finance films in partnership with Sony Pictures, Starz Encore Group and Fox Entertainment Group. In 2003, Revolution Studios will release 10 films, starring such notable talent as Bruce Willis, Jack Nicholson, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, Harrison Ford, Josh Hartnett, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Cuba Gooding Jr., Ed Harris, Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, and Julia Stiles.
