When Jennifer Garner was first cast as Elektra she said she wanted to do the film because of its great love story, not necessarily because of the comic book/action angle. As Elektra, Garner gets to mix the best of both worlds - she holds her own as a physically strong woman and she melts the heart of Matt Murdock (aka Daredevil), played by Ben Affleck.
While at the "Daredevil" Premiere, Garner spoke about both aspects of her character and gave a little insight into her take on what sets "Daredevil" apart from other comic book heroes:
JENNIFER GARNER ('Elektra')
What makes "Daredevil" stand out from other superheroes?
He stands out because he is real. He's superhuman, he's not a superhero. He's a normal guy who happens to have these incredibly acute senses. He's compelled to be out in the world fighting crimes one at a time. It's not about saving the whole world, it's about saving his neighborhood - a 10-block radius. And it's not a huge crime, it's saving a little boy from being beaten or saving a woman from being raped.
Can you describe Elektra? What interested you in playing this role?
She is driven by vengeance and she's a very powerful woman. The great thing about this movie is that it starts with her falling in love and so what was fun about playing her was that I got to play both the tenderness and the blissfulness of falling in love, and also her vengeful, darker side. [This part was a] fun addition to my career.
How difficult was this role physically?
It was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life physically. It was night after night, day after day after day of just fighting.
What's the biggest surprise about making "Daredevil?"
The fact that I made it out with all 4 limbs (laughing).
Can you talk about working with Ben Affleck?
He is so fun and such a gentleman. And he's just a fantastic actor and totally dedicated.
Is Colin Farrell really as wild as the papers are making him out to be?
The great thing about Colin is that he doesn't pretend to be anything that he's not. He's having a great time. He celebrates life everyday. I love that about him.
Are you enjoying your reputation as an action star?
It's fun because it's so unexpected. When I went to college, when I was first kind of deciding that I wanted to be an actress, it was all about words. I just loved Shakespeare and restoration drama. The fact that now what I'm known for is the physical side of it cracks me up, personally. It's so much fun and it makes me really happy.
How much of your action persona carries over into real life? When are you the most physically active?
Between “Action” and “Cut.” None of this stuff I would do unless somebody says, “Action.”
What do you hope female audiences will get out of watching your work?
I hope that they see that these women choose brain over brawn, first of all, but that they can take care of themselves and that they don't need a man to make them anything. The women that I'm known for playing, Sydney Bristow [in "Alias"] and Elektra, are both completely capable and at the same time, not afraid of their own femininity.
What's the most daring thing you've done?
Get married. I think that's pretty daring, don't you?
Are you getting hungry for comedic roles?
Of course, that's what I'm doing this summer - a romantic comedy. It'll be fun.
